Asian American Voters Pivotal to Rep. Susie Lee’s Win in Nevada’s Third Congressional District

LAS VEGAS: With a margin of 2 percent and 93 percent of all votes tabulated, incumbent Susie Lee is projected to be the winner in Nevada’s battleground 3rd Congressional District. Asian American voters comprised 14 percent of the voting age population in this closely contested 3rd District, or one out of every seven voters. An election eve poll conducted by the AAPI Civic Engagement Fund shows Asian Americans supported Lee 47 percent to 43 percent, providing a key margin of support for the candidate.

“Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) voters in Nevada once again flexed their political power as a key voting block, rejecting candidates that promoted racism and misinformation and instead supporting those who made concerted outreach to and investments in the APIA community while in office and in their campaign outreach,” said Eric Jeng, Deputy Director of One APIA Nevada. “Without the APIA vote, the 3rd District would be represented by an election denier come January. We showed the nation that as a constituency, APIA voters stand in solidarity with Black and Latinx voters in electing candidates who will protect and advance democracy.”

Nationally, Asian American voters overwhelmingly favored progressive candidates and policies in the 2022 midterm elections, according to the election eve poll. Results over the past 10 years have been similar. This year, Asian American voters nationally, compared to other races, support Democratic to Republican candidates as follows (net support, followed by Democratic support and Republican support):

    • Black Voters: 47% net support (71% – 24%)
    • Asian American Voters: 12% net support (51% – 39%)
    • Latinx Voters: 10% net support (53% to 43%)
    • White Voters: -9% (43% – 52%)

“In Nevada and throughout the country, Asian American voters now hold progressive views on a variety of issues including reproductive rights, climate change, and immigration,” said EunSook Lee, Executive Director of AAPI Civic Engagement Fund. “AAPIs resoundingly rejected efforts to foment racial divisions and stoked anti-Asian violence, particularly during the pandemic.”

In addition to Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District, Asian American voters comprise 23 percent of the total voting population in California’s 47th District. In that race, the 2022 AAPI Civic Engagement Fund election eve poll shows Asian American voters supported incumbent Katie Porter by 53 percent versus 36 percent for her opponent. With 60 percent of the votes tabulated, Porter currently maintains a 50.8 percent to 49.2 percent lead over her challenger Scott Baugh.

METHODOLOGY

Polling was conducted online from October 28 – November 8, 2022. Using its Bias Correct Engine to attain a representative sample, Change Research polled 3,201 likely 2022 voters nationwide, 650 likely voters in California’s 47th Congressional District, and 611 likely voters in Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District. The samples in each Congressional District, as well as the nationwide sample, included oversamples of Asian American & Pacific Islander voters. Post-stratification was performed in each geography on age, gender, race/ethnicity, and 2020 presidential vote, as well as region (in the nationwide sample) and education (in the NV-03 sample). The surveys were conducted in English, Mandarin, Korean, Vietnamese and Tagalog. The modeled margin of error, which incorporates the design effect, was 2.1% in the nationwide sample, 4.5% in CA-47, and 4.7% in NV-03.
